Now, everyone loves a cupcake right. They are one of the trendiest things on the market right now, obviously along with suede skirts and jumpsuits and all things bohemian. When I was back in Suffolk for my Sister’s big day, an old school friend got in touch and told me about her newly opened cupcake business and asked if I would sample some of the goodies. HELL’S YEH was my answer, obvs. Because I am partial a cupcake or two, I’m only human.
So the lovely Steph met me for a quick exchange of a hug for a box of treats and I took them home to my drooling family and boyfriend who waited patiently until I had took my photos before helping me devour them. Cheers for that guys. Let me just say that there wasn't a crumb left in sight and there were smiles and satisfied bellies all round.
The name of the business is Narnie’s Kitchen which is unique in itself. There is a lovely story behind it which I will let Steph explain in her own words:
"The company is named after a lady - my mum couldn't pronounce "auntie"; she took my nan and my mum in just after my mum was born and helped my nan with lots of things. She wasn't a blood relation, but she was a lovely woman who was just so nice. She was definitely my great grandma and she touched so many people and bought us all together. We lost her in 2009 and it was gutting. She actually passed away the day before my nans birthday, so it hit her really hard. We have so many treasured memories of her and everything I do is with her in mind. I'll only ever use butter because that's all she ever used and there are little tokens of her throughout what I do - including one of the cupcakes, The Bluebell because it was one of the flowers she liked the most.
She would probably say "why on earth would you name it after me?" She never thought of herself as anything but normal, but she was a truly extraordinary lady who deserved a lot of credit and this is my tribute to her. Of course, I would love to make a living doing this; but it's more about the love that I have for it and the love that you can pass on using food - which is something I get from Narnie!"
The cakes were deliciously buttery and rich. One of the things I loved the most about these bad boys are the distinct flavours that come out. The three types I got to try were named 'The Strawnilla', 'The Belly Jean' and 'The Chocolate Orange' - and there are plenty more to choose from! You can have a box of just one kind or mix and match to your tastebuds preferences.
Currently you can order through the website or through the Narnie's Kitchen Facebook page and delivery is anywhere in the UK - you can also opt for free collection. The business is based in Ipswich, Suffolk. Wheeeey hometown! As it stands at the moment, the business is just online and Steph puts her heart and soul into each little cup of joy. In the future she hopes to have her own shop. There are also plans to branch into wholesaling - so watch this space guys.
